There was a prolonged polemic concerning prayer during Suharto administration. When a prominent figure or a political party said a prayer for the well-being of the president, many other sides felt uneasy, blaming it as Political Prayer and “begging.” Of course, as usual those who prayed vehemently denied the accusation. No one knew how it was resolved. Those protesting sides staged a Counter Prayer, pleading like: “Oh lord don’t listen to their prayer. There is something behind it. Our prayer is more sincere and much longer, more people pleading, and no political reason”
