The early years when the new campus where I teach was officially opened, patients from the near-by mental hospital commonly got stranded around the compound. This was disturbing, as they often suddenly popped up by the classroom windows and doors when class was going on, making students scared and distracted.
Once I dared to persuade such a fellow, who was about to recover, standing by the door to go home:
Patient: I don’t know where to go home.
Lecturer It is over there (pointing). There you can read RUMAH SAKIT JIWA
Patient Are you crazy? It is for the visitors to read. Had I been able to read it, I wouldn’t have been there.
Since what this guy had said had sense in it, and frankly speaking, I got embarrassed. I thought it would be wise to attend to the problem of such unlucky people. Putting up another board for the patients beside the existing one, which is for the visitors, would give an end to the problem. Things like “Sakit Rumah Jiwa” or “Jiwa Rumah Sakit”, or “Rumah Sakit Waji,” etc. sounds appropriate.
